Mike Portnoy is the drummer of progressive metal band dream theater.It was mike,John Myung (bassist) and John Petrucci (guitarist) who at first started of as an instrumental band called majesty as they struggled not being able to find a vocalist until they found Kevin Labrie (who changed his name to James so as not to create confusion between their keyboardist,Kevin Moores with him.)and then later Kevin as keyboardist...Now on to Mike...Well he is the 2nd (youngest)person ever since Neil Peart of Rush (also progressive metal) to be inducted to the modern drummers hall of fame at the tender age of only 37! Like anyone could have seen that coming after he won 23 awards from modern drummer magazine.

After Kevin Moores left the band after the release of "awake" Portnoy has filled Kevin's spot for writing some of the lyrics...but he has been writing quite an amount from change of seasons onwards.Now onto biography...Mike,born and raised in long beach, New York.His dad was a Dj and that was how Mike got introduced to bands like beatles, queen, led zeppelin, the who and yes.Mike self taught drums but still attended some music schools.It was in Berklee College of music and arts where he met petrucci and myung and formed majesty that would become dream theater.

He was mainly influenced the most by neil peart of rush and also had favorite drummers like John Bonham, Vinny Colaiuta, Peter Criss, Keith Moon, Phil collins, Bill Bruford, Ringo starr and simon philips.

Portnoy is also well known for his various "killer" drum sets..like purple, green, red monster, siamese monster, images and words kit, awake kit, Liquid Tension Experiment kit, Transatlantic kit, The Mirage Monster, The Albino Monster, hammer of the gods, Yellow Matter Custard kit and the OSI kit..

Mike has a wife Marlene, a daughter Melody Ruthandrea and a son max john and a dog bonjo and a cat cypress. In Mike's yearbook after graduation it was written that his ambition was to be "the next neil peart" and we know he's almost there... The kit show is the siamese kit.
